Reportedly owned by Mary Philipse (1730-1825, later Morris), New York, then York, England, c. 1758 [this and the following according to letter from a family descendant, June 15, 1972, and documentation from Cora Ginsburg, Ltd., Aug. 10, 1977; copies in curatorial object file; Mary Philipse was the daughter of Federick Philipse II, second lord of Philipsburg Manor, Westchester County, New York; she married Roger Morris in 1758]; by descent within the Morris and Bower families; sold, Christies. Cora Ginsburg, Ltd., Tarrytown, NY, by Aug, 10, 1977; sold to the Art Institute of Chicago, 1978.
