Presumably John Warne Gates (died 1911), St. Charles, Illinois; his widow Dellora Baker Gates (died 1918) [according to a letter from A. B. Hussander to the Art Institute dated February 8, 1924, copy in curatorial file]; by descent to their niece Dellora A. Norris (née Angell, married to Lester J. Norris) [according to the 1924 letter cited above]; on loan to the Art Institute in the name of her father, Robert Francis Angell, from 1923 [according to the loan receipt dated 1923]; given to the Art Institute, 1970.
